3 Tips for Picking Art for Your Walls
Posted on March 14th, 2016 by susan@greenbauminteriors.com.
While color schemes, furniture, and flooring options are the foundation of any great room and the basics of interior design, you should never underestimate the importance of a piece of art and the impact it can have. The right piece of art can transform an already good room into a great one and create beauty where there was only blandness. Here are three tips for picking the right piece of art.
- Pick artwork that matches the size of your wall and the room it will be placed in. If you have a large sitting room with a 15-foot vaulted ceiling, a 10″x10″ picture will be dwarfed by the sheer enormity of your room. On the other hand, if you live in a one-bedroom apartment, mounting a panoramic photo that is six feet long will be far too visually unbalanced to look good. Match your art to the size of your room.
- Pick styles and colors that accent your décor. While a modern abstract painting can look amazing in a city loft, it will be out of place in a country kitchen. Likewise, a pastoral scene in warm, inviting colors will look out of place in a sleek, modern office.
- Ignore the price when looking for art. Collecting original works of art is a great hobby, but don’t confuse collecting with decorating. You can find great reproductions and reprints of your favorite pieces for a fraction of the cost of an original.
